A 4-Step System for Uncovering Hot Niche Markets

Whether you are an affiliate marketer, a website designer or you make your living creating and marketing infoproducts such as ebooks, discovering profitable niche markets to exploit is probably at the top of your "to-do" list. The following is a four-step system you can apply anytime you need to find a new niche audience to target and profit from.

1. Initial Brainstorming

This first step is best approached with a very open mind and a notebook and pen handy. The idea is to seek topics that are outside your current realm of knowledge. One of the best ways to do this is by reading blogs.

Bloggers come from every walk of life, and you will find blogs with information on almost any niche topic imaginable. Best of all, bloggers provide fresh, timely information.

Start spending some time reading some random blogs. A good starting place would be at blog directories such as Blogdex - http://www.blogdex.net . As you are reading, you'll discover many different topics being discussed. Many of these you may have never heard of before. Start writing these down.

Example: You found yourself reading a blog post that described the blogger's recent experience at a demolition derby. Maybe you don't know much yourself about this niche, so you add "demolition derby" to your list.

2. Keyword Research

Once you have a list of several possible niches, the next step is to find out what keywords and keyword phrases people are using to search for this and related information via the major search engines. Good Keywords -http://www.goodkeywords.com for example, is a free Windows software you can download that will help you do just this. With this program, you can type-in a topic from your list and the software will begin to uncover many related keyword phrases being actively searched for.

It takes time to get the hang of this software, but once you master it you will be able to generate large and valuable keyword lists. After you uncover at least a few dozen related keyword phrases, save your list and move onto the next step. If you are not able to uncover many related keyword phrases, chances are there is not much potential here and you should start over with another topic from step one.

Example: Using Good Keywords or a similar tool, you enter the term "demolition derby". You soon have a large list of related keyword phrases people have been using to search for information on this topic, such as "demolition derby video" and "demolition derby car for sale".

3. Secondary Idea Creation

Read through the keyword list you generated. Some of your keyword phrases are going to give you ideas for other target audiences you may want to explore in the future. Take some time now to write these new ideas down while they are still fresh in your mind. Save this information for later reference. You can never have enough fresh ideas to explore when trying to uncover under-exploited niche markets.

Example: One of the keyword phrases in your "demolition derby" list was "demolition derby game online" - you note that later you should explore what other types of online games people are searching for.

4. Niche Potential Analysis

If you used Good Keywords to mine for keyword phrases, you will have also been provided with an approximate number of times each of these terms was searched for during the past month. The next thing you need to do is compare this number, representing potential search engine traffic, with the number of websites already catering directly to these searches.

To do this, start by taking your keyword phrases and do an exact phrases search on each of them at Google, making certain to surround your keyword phrase in quotes. Write down the number of results google brings back for your search. Next, compare the number of monthly searches for each phrase to the number of Google results.

If you are lucky, you will discover that some of your keyword phrases with good monthly traffic don't have many results in the search engines yet. If you find that you have uncovered a niche that has several keyword phrases with a high number of monthly searches and at least a few of them have a low number of results in Google, chances are you have found a very good niche to exploit with your next online project. If not, go back to the list you created in step one and repeat the process.

Example: You discover that the phrase "demolition derby car for sale" is searched for around 700 times monthly, but brings back only 486 results in Google and the term "demoliton derby pic" receives several hundred searches a month but only returns 258 results in Google. You are very happy to have discovered a potentially hot niche with good under-exploited keyword phrases to target.

Although there are several costly and difficult to master programs available that can help you discover unique target markets, the system above has proven to be an effective free method for uncovering niches to profit from. Apply it today and be on your way to niche marketing success.

How to Cheat Traffic Exchanges

There are many ways to cheat traffic exchanges and generate massive numbers of hits to your website. Some are complex and some are simple. Below is a list of some of the more popular methods of cheating.

Give yourself a point for each method of cheating that you already employ and then rate yourself on our cheat-o-meter.

-- Opening the same exchange in several windows to generate multiple hits at a time.

-- Insert the Start URL from one exchange into the Target URL from another.

-- Open multiple windows and minimise them until just the "Next Page" link is showing. Click away.

-- Use a custom browser (eg – Crazy Browser) to "auto-click" through exchange programs so it generates hits while you watch Jerry Springer.

-- Use custom made software designed to get around the cheat-protection on a traffic exchange.

How did you do?

-- 1pt: You are a liar and a thief

In truth, if you are a serial cheater, then you have probably stopped reading this article when you realised it wasn’t going to teach you anything you didn’t already know.

If you have played around with any of these ideas, then you might find the idea of being called a "thief" extreme. I disagree.

If you are using any of these methods, you are one step away from shoplifting sweets from the corner shop.

And this is why.

When someone creates a new traffic exchange a lot of time and money goes into the projects creation and administration. They may give away free hits as an introductory offer but, after that, hits can only be purchased or earned.

This is how the owner makes his income. This is how they see a return on their efforts.

If you earn these credits through fradulent means, this is akin to getting a friend to clock you out of work while you take the afternoon off. You are earning something you haven’t WORKED for.

I’ve heard it argued that traffic exchange owners make so much money, they barely notice the lost credits that cheaters steal.

This is the same ridiculous argument that says it is ok to steal from large department stores because "they can afford it". At the end of the day, the losses are added to the prices that honest people choose to pay. Honest surfer’s hard earned credits are wasted by cheats.

And you are still a thief whether the individual you steal from can afford it or not.

I should also point out that the majority of traffic exchange owners are not rich. The successful ones may make a tidy income, but the majority are probably struggling to break even. Stealing credits does not help their endeavours.

If you are using, or considering, any kind of cheat method, please think twice. Think about your reputation, think about the owner you are stealing from, and think about Dylan Campbell whose credits are being frittered away on Crazy Browser enthusiasts who think they have discovered something new.

Theft isn’t new. It just keeps changing shape.

And for all those smug surfers out there who are sat back, smugly thinking, "I never cheat". Do you honestly view EVERY website for the ENTIRE time the counter is ticking?

I doubt it. And let’s be sensible, it is almost impossible not to break the occasional term or condition. So many traffic exchanges, each with their own unique demands. Who can remember every single last rule?

I’m not demanding perfection from surfers, just a certain amount of fair play. So let me tell you how I surf.

Am I a cheat? No. Do I break terms & conditions? Yes. Do I view EVERY website that I click through? Yes. And I believe that it is every traffic exchange users duty to do the same.

Step 1) Make a list of all the traffic exchanges you belong to. For this example, pretend I am a member of 20.

Step 2) List all the days you know you can spend at least 20 minutes surfing. For this example, Monday, Wednesday, Friday and Saturday.

Step 3) Share out the exchanges equally among the days. For this example, I can assign five exchanges to each day.

Step 4) Visit the Start URL of the first exchange on your list. Go to the menu bar of IE and click, "Favourites" and then, "Add to Favourites". Create a new folder called, "Surf Monday" or something similar and add the Start URL to this folder. Repeat for the next four exchanges on your list.

Step 5) Repeat Step 4 for the next five exchanges on your list and place them in a new folder called, "Surf Wednesday" or something similar. Repeat this process for Friday’s and Saturday’s.

When Monday comes around, open the appropriate folder for Monday’s and open all the exchanges in that folder in separate browser windows. Make sure they are ALL full size.

You should see each copy of IE that you have opened, listed in the Windows bar at the bottom of your screen. If they are grouped together, click on the IE group and you should be able to see each Traffic Exchange listed individually. Make sure you haven’t acidentally opened the same Traffic Exchange twice.

Click on the first exchange and view the website. When the counter has finished click to the next site and IMMEDIATELY move to the next IE window. Precious seconds are wasted while the next website loads, so use them instead viewing the website in the next IE window.

Once again, view the website until the counter has finished, click to the next site and immediately move to the next browser window in your sequence.

Notice that I am not viewing each website for the full length of the counter, but I am viewing EVERY website. I, for one, would have no problem with my websites being viewed in this manner. Far better, than not being viewed at all because of a cheaters greed.

When you have viewed each browser window in sequence, return to the first browser window and repeat the process. If pop-ups are a problem, try the free Google Toolbar. A good pop-up stopper will make your surfing a lot easier.

If you come across a website that looks interesting, don’t stop surfing. If you have assigned 20 minutes for surfing, then you don’t want to break your rythym. Instead, right-click the mouse button inside the website you like the look of and select "Add to Favourites…". Create a new folder called, "Look Later" or something similar, and add the website to this folder.

You MUST use the right-click technique rather than using the menu bar. Otherwise you will bookmark the traffic exchange and not the website you are interested in.

At the end of your surfing session, once a day, once a week or whenever you feel is appropriate, open the "Look Later" folder and spend as much time as you want examining the websites you selected and joining/investing in the programs that are worthwhile.

Assuming you can view all five browser windows twice a minute, that you spend 20 minutes in each surfing session and that the traffic exchange ratios average 2:1, this example would earn you 400 hits a week.

If you spent an hour each day surfing, this increases to 1200 hits a week. Not too shabby, especially when you start factoring in down-lines and other traffic generating programs you may use.

Final Thought -- Honesty still prevails in this industry and it will continue to do so while people continue to champion the virtues of conducting business in a decent way. Cheaters may prosper, but so can the honest workers, if they are patient and don’t abandon their values. If you are a program owner and you catch a cheater, forget the two strikes, benefit of the doubt rubbish. Throw him out into the gutter where he belongs. I would rather be deleted from a program in error than make things easier for the thieves of this industry.

The thank-you take-a-way packet will vary depending on your type of business. For a high-end retail location we suggest using a small folder about the size of a half sheet of paper. On the outside of the folder should be an effective and professional design with the words “Thank You.” Inside the folder should contain all the relevant paperwork associated with their purchase as well as all necessary information to make sure that their after purchase experience is pleasant and well informed. This information should go on one side of the folder only.

The other side of the folder is where you will put your pieces of value. Pieces of value can include anything that your customer will enjoy receiving. Successful examples include, a free appetizer at a local restaurant, free dry cleaning, a small book on a topic relevant to their purchase, or a small ad-specialty item from a complimentary business. The pieces of value will differ depending on the type of business that you are in. Use your imagination and have fun with it.

These thank-you packets work because every company that is represented in your packet will reciprocate by including your piece of value in their packet. Therefore, you are quadrupling your exposure to customers from complimentary businesses in exchange for giving your customers something that they perceive as a gift.

2. Website Co-Branding

When you have a strong guerilla partner network, you can use a similar approach with your website. The group of businesses can link their websites together in a way that ‘provides value first’. Providing value first means that the link needs to be positioned in a way that is more than an advertisement.

A good cooperative link on a website is more than just an advertisement. It must be something that would interest a customer. Examples include interesting tips, suggestions, or examples of how the customer can enhance their experience. For example, having an interior designer and a realtor provide design tips could add value and augment the experience of buying a new home.

3. Lunch and Learns

Whether you are a financial planner, a realtor, or a fitness expert, you have valuable information that people would love to hear about. When you provide value first and you provide value without expectation of something in return, a return is exactly what you will get.

Office buildings love food -- especially free food. The lunch-and-learn program is a guerilla marketing strategy that has been proven successful. The lunch and learn program is an educational lunch program for an office that would be sponsored by you or your company. The office personnel would gather and eat lunch while listening to your talk on something both valuable and interesting. Do not try to sell them anything; this should be treated as an opportunity to share valuable information that they can use.

The best contact to set up these lunches is the office manager. Most times the office will provide the lunch and you will provide the talk. If they do not provide lunch, you will be able to negotiate for a local restaurant to provide the lunch for free in exchange for some signage on the lunch table and their information in your packet that will accompany your presentation.

Topics will naturally vary depending on your profession. If you are a financial planner you can give a talk on “10 things you can do now to guarantee financial security,” “investing tips for the non-investor,” or anything else that is both creative and interesting. After the mini seminar, ask “If anyone would like to hear more about (topic), just drop your business card in the basket at the front.” You can also have a mini- book prepared on the subject and offer to send it free to anyone who is interested. You will leave with an established reputation in the field as well as a small stack of qualified leads with whom you have already established rapport and credibility.

4. Be A Guest Columnist In A Newsletter

There are networking organization newsletters, non-profit newsletters, and internal company newsletters. These newsletters are always looking for guest columnists that will provide a relevant and an interesting article.

This technique is similar to the concept of the lunch and learns. Seek out these newsletters and offer to write a column. When they run your column, you will provide valuable and interesting information. By doing so you will be getting your name out into the community as an expert in your field. By having a brief bio at the end of the column, the readers who have an interest will have the information necessary to contact you for further information. You may even direct them to your website to download a small mini-book on the topic where you will capture their information for proper follow up.

The different types of guerilla marketing are endless and are only limited by your imagination and willingness to get out in front of people. Guerilla Marketing is incredibly effective because the rapport that the partner business has already established with their customer is transferred to you and your company. When you successfully implement guerilla marketing into your marketing plan, then your cost per lead will be significantly reduced while the quality of your traffic will dramatically increase.

Everyone wants to know the big secret to driving traffic to their website. Every day I see an article or an ad talking about driving people to your website. Driving traffic to a website has become the “holy grail” on the internet. People are realizing that 'if you build it, they won't come... unless you give them a reason'. Website traffic just doesn’t happen by itself. Your website is just one of many millions on the web and people rarely just stumble upon your site by accident.

There are many ways to drive traffic to your website. You can buy traffic from vendors that will pummel your website with hits from automated programs. This will increase your hits but will it increase your bottom line? Probably not. You can set up blogs that spider (connect to) your website increasing your traffic count. Does this drive users to your website? Only if your blog is sointeresting that people are reading it. There are thousands of blogs posted on the internet and your blog is just a needle in the internet haystack.

Another trick is to create RSS (Really Simple Syndication) feeds for your website and subscribe to other RSS feeds. This again will increase your hit count but will do very little to drive potential customers to your website unless you’re providing valuable information. Tricks will increase your hit count but do very little todrive potential customers to your website.

A better way to buy traffic for your website is by using pay-per-click with Yahoo and Google. You identify the most common keywords associated with what you’re offering and bid on those keywords. This can be a costly option if you’re bidding on popular keywords but it’s a reliable way to generate highly targeted traffic. The best way to generate traffic for your website is to provide quality content that will solve your customer’s problems. People search the internet for information that will solve their problems. Spammers VS Bayesian Filters

n a previous article I discussed what a Bayesian filter is, and why they are one of the most effective tools against spammers. But it's important to realize that the war against spam is just that - an ongoing struggle. Spammers must change their tactics, and anti-spam software must change it's own tactics to keep up, and hopefully even stay ahead of the spammers. In any such fight it is ultimately adaptability and versatility that win out.

Let us quickly summarise how a Bayesian filter works. Rather than outright banning words, Bayesian filters assign scores to them based on how likely they are to be found in Spam Messages. The more messages that are either accepted or rejected by the user, the more accurate the Bayesian filter becomes in predicting whether any new message is a spam message or not.

However Spammers aren't silly. I have tried to stress this in my articles on the subject. Annoying - yes. lacking in morals or consideration - certainly. But they aren't stupid. And as a new counter to spam comes out, so does a new avenue of attack by the spammer.

Bayesian filters developed from more simple filters that blocked out certain words. Take the word 'Viagra'. Because it is usually picked up by even the simplest spam filters, spammers have taken to writing it as 'v1agra', 'vi4gra' or any of a number of different variations to bypass the spam filters. Now the initial result of this is slipping past a filter that blocks only 'viagra'. The more long term result is that the word 'v1agra' gets an even higher 'spam score' from Bayesian filters than the original. After all, anyone sending you an e-mail using it is almost certainly writing it that way specifically to fool your anti-spam filters. It may slip through once or twice, but ultimately it is more of an alarm bell to see the modified version of the word than the orginal.

This same rule applies to a multitude of methods of getting past filters. In HTML messages 'Viagra' and 'Viagra' will actually look the same, with the HTML simply ignoring the unrecognisable tags and printing everything it sees in between them. But once again the telltale sign of a word deliberately trying to trick a filter becomes a warning bell in itself.

A further annoying spammer trick is sometimes called 'Bayesian Posioning'. Have you ever received an e-mail that contains a paragraph or two of some strange story that makes little or no sense by itself? This sometimes confusing behaviour is actually an example of spammers fighting back against Bayesian filters. Think for a moment what you did with those messages...mark them as spam? Now think about how the Bayesian filter works. Every time you mark a message as spam it analyses the words in it and increases their 'spam score'. But with these Bayesian Posioning letters you are adding to the spam scores of words used in a perfectly normal context. These spam letters aren't meant to sell you anything, they are just meant to soften up your bayesian filters for a future spam attack. The spammers have made themselves doubly annoying. Not only are they sending out their unwanted commercial messages, but now they send out unwanted nonsense letters as well!

The above paints a pretty bleak picture. How can we fight spammers when they constantly change the tactics that they use to make our filters and defenses ineffective? Don't be downheartened. Spammers aim at the lowest common denominator. Most of the people who are overwhelmed by spammers muck have little idea what is happening or why. The mere fact you are reading this article indicates you do, and hopefully now you have a slightly better understanding of how bayesian filters work, what they can and cannot do and how Spammers attempt to defeat their usefulness.

SpawWasher - The Solution I Use

I have written a number of articles now about Spam, what it is, where it comes from and how you can combat it. These have generated a fair bit of interest and a good number of questions, and the most commonly asked questions focus around what I personally use to protect myself from spam. To be fair there are two ways I can answer this question.

My old answer was 'knowledge'. I have made it my personal business to find out where this plague is coming from, and how we can stop spam. I even developed a website with the intention to help people fight spam.

But the result of my knowledge is that there are programs set up which automatically do many of the things I recommend, and the most successful one I have found is the one I advertise on my website - The SPAMWASHER. I control several domain names and on each it is critical that any email sent to me legitimately gets to me. If it's not critical there is a great option in cpanel which allows you to direct all incoming mail to a blackhole - or delete it immediately. I use this option on my stopspamnow.info site and it saves me many hours of deleting the spam attacks sites like this generate. It also saves on server load as that spam is dealt with quickly and brutally instead of redirected/bounced etc.

For my other domains it is important I get mail, and I need to protect myself from junk. Spamwasher was the third commercial program I tried. Maybe I had learned more by the time I got to it, or maybe it really is just as good as I think it is.

You have to train spamwasher - and this process takes a little while. Invest that time - because it is worth it to log into your mail and see only legitimate messages popping up. Spamwasher is aggressive, but whitelisting names speeds up the process a lot! I would say overall I spent about a week checking the messages spamwasher caught for false positives. The first two days there were quite a few, by the end of the week spamwasher had leant what I like to read and what I like to avoid.

Can you stop spam without a program like spamwasher? I have no doubt. Does spamwasher save me hours of time doing so and was it worth every cent I spent on it? Absolutely.

So there it is. How I deal with spam in a nutshell. You should still do all the sensible things I recommend in my other articles. Don't splash your email address around the internet, delete spam messages without opening them and NEVER buy anything from a spammer. This will help, alot. But a program like spamwasher will provide the knockout blow, and you will once again be able to open your mail box in the morning and smile as you see only messages you want to read.

Can SPAM? Can't Spam? Exactly What Does And Doesn't The US CAN - SPAM Act Do?

In 2003 we saw the introduction of the CAN-SPAM act which, regretably is a step in the wrong direction by the US government. This article provides my own personal opinion of why.

Firstly, let's look at what the act does do. It makes it legal to send spam, but only in a specific way. It is illegal to send spam through virus infected or compromised machines - but then use of these things is illegal anyway. Spam must be sent from a valid e-mail address, and must provide a valid opt-out method.

Essentially what this means is that spammers can send anyone they want a mail and it is up to the recipient to opt-out of receiving more. Let's apply this reasoning to other laws - I can rob you once, and if you would prefer I discontinued please send me a letter. I can rape you or kill you - please tell me if you would like me to stop and after this one time. Yes I realise I robbed you before - but that was a house burglary, this is a car burglary which you haven't yet opted out of. This sort of thinking is obviously non-sensical. If spam is to be regulated against - as it is, and if it is an infringement of peoples rights - as it is, and if you want to stop it - as we do, then why would anyone consider such a farsical law would make any difference.

Spam is bulk unsolicited mail, but the CAN SPAM act has attempted to redefine it as bulk unsolicited mail from a hidden address without an opt out. This represents a serious lack of understanding of exactly what the problem is. If you can send the first spam legally, who is to say whether the second spam is a follow up, or a new legal first spamming? A domain name costs a few dollars, and comes with unlimited email addresses, even if someone does opt out of a spam email they will still likely be contacted by the same spammer, from a different address. In fact, this very policy is likely to give spammers confirmed lists of people who respond to spam!

One thing the CAN SPAM act does do well is allow ISP's the right to handle spam as they see fit. This means that resources like the SPAMHAUS PBL can be used to block spam at it's base.

One final point that is often overlooked is that while the USA has attempted to legislate spam, most countries have outright banned it. This means that the same email sent to a US address and, for instance, and english address can be both legal and illegal. Spammers claiming protection under the CAN SPAM act can only do so within the USA, and can still be prosecuted offshore.

The SPAMHAUS Efforts To Stop Spam

Spam is an international problem, and it seems plain that a solution will have to be an international solution. The organisation known as SPAMHAUS monitor spammers, publish information on them and supply the big ISP's with block lists of the servers that spammers are known to work out of. In conjunction with Law enforcement agencies they work out of the UK, but have representatives in 9 different countries to track serial spammers worldwide.

Their ROKSO list identifies the 200 most prolific spammers, who between them are responsible for over 80% of internet spam. It's remarkable that these people can be tracked and identified, yet are still free to send out 70 million plus emails per day.

Spamhaus maintains a list of the top 10 known spammers and a brief summary of their work. Currently this list consists of:

10. Yambo financials, of the Ukraine, who have a finger in every nasty online business - child porn, solfware pirating, pharmaceuticals, and banking scams.

9. Alexey Panov, or Russia, who provides spammer software, hosting and solutions.

8. Nikhil Kumar Prakji, of Australia, who sends massive ammounts of unsolicited mail through the Dark-Mailer spamware.

7. Vincent Chan, of Hong Kong, who specialises in pharmaceutical type spam and uses hijacked ghost machines to get his messages to the world.

6. Pavko, Artofit, are a gang of Russian spammers believed to include Yambo Financials and the worlds #1 spammer Alex Blood. They began with pharmaceutical spam, but have branched out into other areas and make heavy use of hijacked machines.

5. Micahel Lindsay, of the iMedia Networks in the USA, provides hosting solutions to ROKSO spammers using offshore machines and zombies.

4. Ruslan Ibragimov, of Russia, who developed stealth spamware and uses zombies and virus infected machines to do his spamming.

3. Amichai Inbar, of Israel, who sam porn, drugs and pump and dump stocks.

2. Leo Kuvayev, of Russia, who specialises in (pirated) OEM CD's as well as dabbling in the traditionals of porm, pharmaceuticals and other softwares.

1. Alex Blood, of the Ukraine, who is known by several other aliases including Alexander Mosh, AlexseyB and Alex Polyakov. Spamhaus describes his activities as consisting of Massive botnet and child-porn spam ring, also pharma, mortgage, and more.

Bringing together experts from different countries, and working collectively is the best chance of completely defeating spam.

Spamdexing is the practice of manipulating the natural results of search engines to artificially inflate the positions of a webpage. It is a common practice which both bred it's own industry and saw the rise of internet giant google.

The first search engines were very simple affairs which simply looked for pages with a targeted keyword and listed results based on simple algorithms. Once people started investigating the results generated by these search engines it became a relatively simple process of developing webpages designed specifically to exploit weaknesses in them. In the Mid 1990's this was a common practice and as a result even now we see pages which have spammed keywords all through them in an attempt to out rank the opposition. If a page wanted to be indexed under specific search terms they would frequently display these terms in the same color as the background - making them visible to search engine spiders, but not to real surfers. This practice was common in gateway pages which showed up highly ranked in search engines, but had no purpose but to flow traffic to another page.

It's amazing to think that Google only started in 1997, and in ten years have come to dominate nearly every corner of the internet. This domination was achieved largely through a search engine designed to see through these simple spamdexing tricks, and deliver the results people wanted to see. When they started the search engine market was dominated by MSN and YAHOO, both who have been playing catchup ever since the more advanced Google algorithms granted them a massive share of the search engine market.

Spamdexing still exists in a variety of forms, but is less effective because of the importance search engines now place on delivering real relevancy. The whole search engine optimization industry has built up on the premise that it is possible to manipulate results in major search engine through a variety of factors. The kings amongst these factors are contents and links, with it being generally accepted that the more of both the better, provided the quality is good.

The negative side effect of this increased in search engine efficiency is that many websites are now built with the objective of gaining Search Engine Rankings, rather than usability or usefulness. This means email is not the only spam we sometimes have to deal with, but we may need to wade through several webpages before we find "the one we meant to get".

The idea of blogs is not new. Basically it is an open internet diary or comment book that allows anyone to have their rant, be heard on important issues, update people on events or services or just record the tedious details of their day. People were doing this quite happily for many years, until, like many things on the internet, it became a buzz-word. Pretty soon everyone needed a blog, and those of us who had been blogging for years had to rename our rants and records to blogs so people knew what they were.

Then someone figured with all these people wanting to be heard there must be some money to be made, and companies used blogs as ways of drawing customers back to their sites and selling them over and over. And around about that point things started to get spammy.

Software popped up to automatically create blogs, to update blogs, to draw content from one blog to another site and just about everything else to do with blogs. One of the popular drawcards of blogs is the dialogue created as people respond to the bloggers comments, but spammers quickly realized that this was a way to get their links on highly rated pages, and blogs became another form of spamdexing.

Spamdexing is the use of artificial methods to inflate the search engine rankings of a website. One of the current trends in the spamdexing world is cross linking in it's various forms. By allowing comments on a blog site, the blogger was also offering free advertising space to spammers. Not surprisingly the spammers jumped at this opportunity and the bloggers found their comments bombarded with automatically posted, irrelevant spam replies.

Luckily spam in this form is much easier to combat than email spam. Bloggers required accounts for comments, or added a simple security question that must be answered to participate, or a variety of other simple additions that were difficult to automate, or easy to detect automated attempts. The cost was the ease and user friendliness of blogs, and people must now accept the slight inconvenience as the price to be paid to allow free discussion.

Stop Spam - 3 Filters I Use In Outlook

Controlling my own domain names puts me in an interesting position. All the spam coming into these domain names becomes my personal responsibility, and I learned early on that the default cpanel spam filters generate more than their share of false positives. Prior to getting spamwasher to guard my e-mail I had to manually create filters in outlook to deal with the majority of spam.

As the number of these filters grew I realized I needed a more serious weapon to fight with spam, but if you aren't quite ready to shell out money just yet, or if you'd prefer combat spam with the resources already at your disposal, then the important thing to do is create filters that catch spam, AND ONLY spam. Here' are some of the best ones I used:

Apply this rule after the message arrives Where the Subject line contains 'SPAM' or 'failure notice' or 'delivery failed' or 'undeliverable' or '(Failure)' or 'Undelivered Mail' or 'Returned Mail: see transcript' Delete it

This one was added after I went through an incredible phase of having mail getting bounced back to me. The spammer theory here is a returned message will automatically break through most spam filters, so they send messages to dead addresses using your email address as the reply-to address. When the mail server bounces the message it comes straight through your filters and back to you.

Apply this rule after the message arrives - where the From line contains '@olympic.webitdomainz.com' delete it

This one is fairly specific to me, but is interesting to anyone who uses form-mail. My first attempt at allowing people to contact me directly from the webpage resulted in a mass of spam from spammers exploiting sendmail flaws. Basically they would send spam automatically through my webmail form. As they never filled in a mail address it would appear to come from my old host(incidently if you are thinking of hosting with these guys - DON'T).

Apply this rule after the message arrives - where the Subject line contains 'STOPSPAMNOW' move it to the STOPSPAMNOW folder

I wasn't sure whether or not to add this one as it does give spammers a little window to attack me with. However it is a good example of how to 'whitelist' a message. You can use a word like 'STOPSPAMNOW' to pick up the STOPSPAMNOW newsletter, you can whitelist based on the senders email address or you can use a combination of both, which is preferable.

Hopefully these few short tips will help you in setting up effective anti spam filters.

How To Set Up An Outlook Express Filter

When I began my anti spam crusade, I had assumed that most people online could competently do things such as set up a spam filter in Microsoft Outlook or Outlook Express. It turns out this is not so, the fear of making adjustment to the default settings getting the better of quite a majority of the population, or else just never having the time or inclination to get in and figure it out.

Luckily it is quite an easy process, and even the most computer-ese challenged amongst us can get it done easily once we understand how to it works. In this little how-to I am going to give an example how to set up a filter using Outlook Express, purely on the basis that this is the program open on my desktop as I type this.

There are two parts to a filter - a condition, and an action. The condition defines the set of circumstances that will trigger the action. The action is of course what happens when the circumstances described in the condition are true.

The example I will use here is to delete messages with [SPAM] in the title. My ISP once went through a rather silly phase of not deleting spam - but marking it in the header and leaving the deletions to us. It seems they too had made an assumption that all their customers could set up a filter to handle the hundreds of [SPAM] marked messages they suddenly started receiving. They were quickly put right but overloaded switchboards.

So we are going to create a simple filter in Outlook Express that deletes everything with [SPAM] in the title.

Step 1: Click on the menu Item Tools. Point at Message Rules and select(click on) mail... A small new window will open with the heading Message Rules and three tabs. The Mail... tab will be selected.

Step 2: Click on the New... button. Another new window opens with the titlebar New Mail Rule. There are 4 boxes to fill in.

Step 3: In the first white box Click in the square beside "Where the Subject line contains specific word". A tick will appear in the box. You will notice the 3rd box gets some more writing in it, we will deal with that soon.

Step 4: In the second white box click in the square next to Delete It. A tick will appear in the box. The text in the third white box will now read: Apply this rule after the message arrives, Where the Subject line contains specific words, Delete it. The words 'contains specific words will be blue and underlined.

Step 5: In the third white box click on the blue underlined words 'contains specific words'. A new window will open with the title bar Type Specific Words.

Step 6: In the first box in this window type [SPAM]. Click Add. Click Okay. You will be returned to the previous window. The third box will now contain the text: Apply this rule after the message arrives Where the Subject line contains '[SPAM]' Delete it

Step 7: In the fourth Box type a userfriendly name for your spam filter. I use "Delete [SPAM] rule". Click the OK button. After clicking okay you are taken back to the message rules window. Click OK here and your filter is added. Well Done.

As far as I am aware there is no limit to the number of filters you can apply. The important thing to remember is that the filter doesn't discriminate. If the result returns true then the action (Deleting in this case) will be applied.

Stop Spam To Your Own Lists

One of the most successful methods of Internet marketing is the building of a large list of readers, who have opted in to receive mail from the marketer. This allows the marketer to send out special offers to a targeted list who they know is interested in their product. The benefits of this are obvious, they are more likely to get sales from people who have requested information from them, and they are less likely to get complaints about the commercial nature of their mailing.

Maintaining a list can be a time consuming job, as it does come with a certain ammount of responsibility. The members have trusted the marketer with their e-mail address, and have done so under the assumption that they will not recieve irrelevant mailings, and that their address will never be sold on to other marketers(or flat out spammers).

I recently received a message from a marketer who did almost everything wrong. I promptly emailed him pointing out his errors, unsure if I would come across as helpful or pompous. Evidently it was helpful as I received an apology email and a free product(e-book) from him. Here's a quick rundown of what he did wrong:

1. I never opted in to receive e-mail from him. His first message was a marketing message. As such I could rightly call it spam, and probably would have done had I not recognised the e-mail address. To be honest I was surprised it got through gmail's filters (Had I bought his product with my primary email I doubt it would have got through the SpamWasher filters I use with Outlook Express). A more professional approach would have been to send out an opt in email once I had bought his product (he received my email address after I made a purchase) and only THEN add me to his opt-in list.

2. The subject "Special Offer" was very generic. Infact, the two words are amongst the most likely there are of being picked up by a Bayesian Filter as Spam. I always encourage people with mailing lists to use a special identifier in their subject line. My own mailing list uses [STOPSPAMNOW]. This identifies the message immediately to the recipient, identifying it as coming from you.

3. The worst error was that the marketer had put all his addresses in the to: field. AGGGHHH!!!! Especially considering the nature of the product this is a disaster! Every person who has bought his product from him now has access to my email address. That's a bit scary for me. Never, never NEVER give out your e-mail list to ANYONE. And this is exactly what this marketer did, albeit unintentionally. Any member of that list now knows exactly how many sales he has made and to whom. They can steal the list and use it for their own promotions.

I sincerely hope to those of you who legitimately mail opt-in lists, that none of these errors will hamper your marketing efforts.

Spam Evolution

Symantec has just produced a report on spam messages, what they promote and how they attempt to bypass filters designed to stop spam. The report doesn't really contain any major surprises to me, although it does confirm what I have been seeing in my own studies.

The overall amount of spam made up 70% of all email messages, which is lower than several other sources estimate, but it must be remembered that Symantec takes samples from their own sources and spam may have already been filtered (at the network level) prior to entering this sample data.

The big talking point of the report is that Pornographic spam now makes up only 3% of all spam monitored by Symantec. This is the lowest percentage makeup ever recorded. Clearly - pornography isn't selling for spammers the same as other products. Perhaps everyone who needs enlarging has got it?

The increase in the amount of spam that uses images continues. As bayesian filters catch more and more text based spam, the spammers have changed their method of attack to sending pictures of words. This allows them to use randomised text to beat the Bayesian filters, but once opened the text is overlapped with an image sending the spammers true message. This is not a new tactic, but it has evolved slightly with the increasingly predominant practice of slanting or distorting the writing on these pictures. This is aimed at defeating OCR(Text recognition) software.

The final trend of note in the Symantec report is that non-english speakers are being targeted more than in the past, particularly by casino based spam. French, German and Italian language casino spam has sen a dramatic rise, and picture based spam targets all languages.

On a personal note I have seen an increase in this localisation of spam. I have received no inappropriate language based spam, but I have noted that the distribution of spam to me .com vs my .co.nz email addresses has shifted. I suspect that spammers are hitting localised email addresses with localised content, which is undoubtedly where the increase in language specific spam originates.

Should I Use A Free Spam Blocker

With over 70 billion spams floating around the internet every day, and Symantec reporting that spam continues to be on the rise, it is now more important than ever to guard your email address against spam. The most effective method is he use of a spam blocker, a program designed specifically to filter spam out before it reaches your inbox.

Spam Blockers will usually work with a combination of blacklists, whitelists and bayesian(pronounced Bayes- i - an) filters. The Black List automatically classifies anything from a given email address(or domain) as Spam. The Whitelist automatically classifies anything from a given email address as NOT SPAM. The Bayesian Filter looks at everything left over after the blacklists and the whitelists have been applied and sorts it, based on what you historically label spam. This sort of technology is extremely efficient at filtering spam.

Spam Blockers, like most everything else on the Internet come in both paid and free versions, and the quality ranges from excellent to...well, let's just say I am aware of at least two free spam blockers which actually add to the problem. Spammers can be quite determined in thier efforts to get spam through. It is a common spammer tactic to put up a website with a 'remove from spam' list, which people innocently sign up thier email address to. They have of course just signed up to the spammers list and will be bombarded with spam. A more recent tactic goes a step further, offering free anti-spam software. In one case this software was merely ineffective and let all the spammers spam through, in another it actually infected the target machine with a program that let spam through, and used the targets machine as a zombie for sending spam from.

When dealing with the internet, due diligence is essential. If you want to use a free spam blocker, be sure that you do your research on it first. Just type it's name into google and see what people are saying. You should do this with paid spam blockers too, though they are less likely to be infected, the thought of paying someone to infect my computer disgusts me.

The one anti-spam product I have had a lot of success with, and would happily endorse, is the the one I advertise on my website - SpamWasher.

Don't Become A Spam Zombie

When I received my first spam message I assumed it was a mistake. Someone had sent the email to me when they meant to send it to someone who's address was similar. A typo? As spam became more prevalent, the initial thought that someone had got my address and was sending ME messages was hard to get rid of. Somewhere out there there was a person sitting behind a desk, sifting through email lists and deciding what spam to send me today.

Spammers, as I have indicated in several previous articles, are not silly people. Doing what they do, on the scale they do it, takes a degree of competence and expertise well above the average internet user. And the truth is that even if all the spammers in the world had a change of conscience tomorrow and laid down thier spam-pens, never sending another message, that spam would continue to flow around the world for some time to come.

The problem is zombies. A zombie is a regular internet user who's machine has become infected with a trojan that sets up a SMTP application and sends out spam. There are two basic zombie patterns - the zombie forwards mail sent to them by a spammer, or the zombie comes preprogrammed with a spam message and mailing list. In either case the zombie surfer will usually have no idea that they are sending our spam

Spam zombies are usually created from downloading 'free stuff' from the internet and in particular peer-to-peer software. Spammers also spread the trojans with thier spam itself, and some email clients make this easy by activating scripts within messages. In instances where security settings are low the trojans can be picked up by merely visiting the wrong webpage and allowing certain javascript codes to run.

To avoid becoming a zombie:

1. Always scan anything you download from the internet, and only download from trusted sources.

2. Keep your internet security settings high.

3. Ensure your machine has all the latest updates installed at any point.

4. Regularly scan with an anti-virus AND an anti-Adware program.

5. Employ a quality spam blocker(Such as SpamWasher, avaliable on my site) to protect yourself against viruses transmitted by spam mail.

There is enough spam in the world as it is without your machine turning into a zombie and adding to the problem.

4 Quick Tips To Stop Spam Robots Getting Your Email While Maintaining Customer Service

One of the most important things for a website which hopes to provide good quality support is to be readily contactable and the best way of doing this has been to provide a support email address. Unfortunately, such addresses are easily harvested by spam robots, who's task is simply to trawl the internet looking for 'naked' or poorly concealed email addresses and adding them to the spammers lists.

Traditional tricks to combat this included replacing the '@' with an 'at', hiding the email address amongst meaningless HTML like this so it would display on the page but be all but unreadable in the code, or replacing the periods with the word 'dot'. The first and third tricks are also used by spammers to hide web addresses from filters in their e-mails, and the second trick is actually learned from spammers who want to hide words marked heavily by Bayesian filters. In the eternal battle between spammers and the good guys, these types of tactics are continually developed and then integrated into spammers robots and while they still offer some protection, it only makes it slightly harder for spammers to get your address, not impossible.

There are however alternatives, enabling you to offer good customer service without opening yourselves up to massive spamming.

1. Use Live Support - A live support module is appreciated by users because they can get an answer right on the spot. If you can afford the staff to man it then it is well worth it for this reason alone. The anti-spam implications are also clear, as the robot needs it's own built in spammer to annoy the support staff, and while these do exist, they are practically unused because they simply don't offer a good return.

2. Use a lead in question before supplying an address. This is a simple tactic using good ASP or PHP programming which asks the user a simple question - such as who they want to contact or what they need help with and then follows up with either a mail form, a faq, a contact address or a combination of these things. When well programmed the spammer needs to make custom code in their robot to get past it - in other words it is more trouble than getting the email address manually.

3. Use an image - or better yet a series of images. Software that recognises images does exist and is used, but again it is nowhere near as prevalent as software that reads text and generally is more trouble than it is worth for a spammer.

4. Use a telephone number. One thing people like is actually knowing that a person is dealing with their enquiry. There is still no better way of doing this than offering telephone support. Toll free numbers are best, but even VoIP calling or a regular number will work as a means of contact.

Regardless of the method you use to offer your customer support, the most important thing to remember is that your customer wants a response and wants to know their problem is being worked on. It's possible to design a very elaborate system to stop spammers getting through to you, but if you stop your customers getting through to you then you've rather defeated the purpose.

Opt-In Forms

Finally, by no means last, but the last of the five, this is not strictly a means of gaining traffic, but a way of maintaining it. It can be argued that keeping the traffic you get is, in effect, a means of increasing your annual traffic flow. Whether you agree or not, if you fail to include an opt-in form on your website you will lose a great deal of potential traffic.

What an opt-in form does is to provide you with a list of first names and email addresses of everybody who visited your web site and filled in the form. In order to seduce them to do so you will have to offer them something. This is usually a newsletter offering news and information on a regular basis about your niche, or even a course over a number of emailings. The important thing is to get that email address.

Five Basic Traffic Generation Techniques

If your business relies on the internet as a source of leads or sales, then getting visitors to your site is the name of the game. No traffic, no leads, no sales. Lots of traffic, lots of leads, more sales. So it all boils down to traffic generation techniques.

There are a few basic traffic generation activities that you must do. These include the following:

Search Engine Optimization. Do it. Even if you have to pay for it. In the long run your cheapest leads or sales are going to be those that came from organic searches via search engines. Make sure you’re listed in Google, MSN, Yahoo! and the open directory project (wwwdotdmozdotorg) and make sure you show up higher rather than lower.

Online advertising. Pay-per-click advertising is probably the next most affordable way to get traffic. Affordable because, generally, you can limit the amount of exposures that get made to something you can afford. Consider programs like Google’s AdWords, or banner ads of one sort or the other.

Email Marketing. Create a list. Mail it and provide offers or incentives that drive people to your site.

Conventional Advertising. Use conventional advertising where appropriate. Magazine ads are a good medium with a long shelf-life (by comparison to an email.)

Collateral Inclusion. Be sure to put your web address on everything that you do business with. It’s all called collateral – stationery, brochures, invoices, business cards, etc. Put your web address on your building sign or on your front door!

Traffic generation is really quite simple. Make a checklist and decide, for each of the categories above exactly how you’ll utilize that method for traffic generation. Check it regularly and make sure you cover all the bases!

I have begun the initial testing and tweaking phases of learning to monetize pay per click traffic. What I have accomplished is driving large volumes of traffic using pay per click. What I have not accomplished is monetizing that traffic effectively. I must warn you before I leave this article, if you choose to use or try pay per click, you must recognize that there is a mandatory testing and tweaking phase at the beginning, there is no way around it, and can be very expensive -- do not begin using pay per click if you do not have at least $2000 to spend in the initial testing and tweaking phase.
